A Cottage Wedding at Lac Sainte-Marie, Outaouais, Quebec

There’s something special about photographing a wedding at a place that already means something to the couple; this Lac Sainte-Marie wedding, tucked in Quebec’s beautiful Outaouais region, was exactly that. The groom’s family cottage, a former fishing lodge tucked right on the water, wasn’t just a beautiful backdrop. It’s where the couple got engaged the year before, which made choosing it as their wedding venue feel like the most natural decision in the world.

With around 50 guests, the day had that relaxed, intimate feeling I love; more like a weekend at the lake with the people who matter most than a formal, buttoned-up affair. A big white tent hosted the ceremony, and the back deck overlooking the lake became the heart of the celebration, from cocktail hour right through to dancing under the stars. Instead of a formal sit-down dinner, the couple kept things easy with passed appetizers, so guests could wander, mingle, and soak up the setting all day long.

Getting Ready on the Water

Speeches followed with heartfelt words from the best man and maid of honor, the parents, and then from the bride and groom themselves, before the group settled in for dinner.

The day started with the groom and his groomsmen, and this cottage property gave us some genuinely fun options beyond the usual getting-ready shots. This included a few playful frames out on the dock with fishing rods in hand, fitting for a former fishing lodge, plus some quieter moments in the smaller cottage tucked around the property.

Meanwhile, the bride was getting ready with her bridesmaids in the main cottage, hair already done off-site and now deep into makeup and the final steps into her dress. There’s always a different energy in the bride’s getting-ready space, and this one, filled with lake light coming through the windows, was no exception.

A First Look on the Dock

Rather than waiting until the ceremony, the couple chose a first look out on the back dock. The same spot, fittingly, close to where they’d gotten engaged. It’s one of my favourite parts of any wedding day: watching a couple see each other for the first time with no one else around. From there we moved into couples portraits, mostly focusing on portraits in the cottage (before guests arrived) then gathered the bridesmaids and groomsmen for group portraits before the bridal party tucked back into the cottage as guests began to arrive.

The Ceremony and Cocktail Hour

Lakeside Ceremony

Guests gathered under the big white tent for the beautiful and heartfelt ceremony, and from there the celebration flowed naturally out onto the back deck for a relaxed cocktail hour. The groom’s sister stepped in as an easygoing MC, letting everyone know what was coming next, while live music from a couple of musicians filled the space under the tents.

Golden Hour by the Lake

As the light started turning gold, I pulled the couple away for sunset portraits by the water and rose gardens. Both locations offered stunning backdrops to this couple’s love. We fit in quick family portraits as we slid into blue hour, with that soft, glowing light that lake settings do so well. The moon was bright and breathtaking, so we took a few quick photos of the Bride and Groom with it as well.

Cake, Fireworks, and Dancing Into the Night

As blue hour settled in, the cocktail tables on the deck were cleared away to make room for dancing, while cake cutting happened inside as a lighthearted, low-key moment. Then came a total surprise for the bride: a few fireworks lighting up over the back deck. The night wrapped up with the couple’s first dance inside the lodge before the party moved fully into dancing and celebration.

Why I Love Venues Like This

Cottage weddings like this one are exactly the kind of day I want to keep photographing more of; outdoor-focused, not overly traditional, and deeply personal to the couple hosting them. There’s nothing quite like a venue that already holds meaning, whether that’s an engagement spot, a family property, or just a place that feels like them. The couple was kind enough to mention how much they appreciated me keeping the day on track and giving them a heads-up as we started losing light, the little things that make a big difference when you’re trying to soak up every moment of your wedding day.
