Iceland Elopement Inspiration: Black Sand Beaches, Waterfalls & Mountains
My experience in Iceland
I recently returned from Iceland and I can’t stop thinking about how every place I visited felt cinematic; the black sand beaches, moody skies, waterfalls spilling off cliffs, and endless open landscapes. An Iceland elopement would be truly magical.
During my recent travels through Iceland’s south coast, I photographed several intimate styled elopement and engagement sessions in places like Vik, Selfoss, and Vestrahorn, and completely fell in love with the idea of documenting adventurous, deeply personal weddings and couples shoots here.
Iceland feels like the perfect place for a truly intimate wedding or elopement. The landscape is rugged, open and otherworldly; every new place I kept finding myself saying “wow”, because I never imagined such places existed on earth. Iceland’s south coast is perfect for couples looking for jaw-dropping landscapes, adventure, and experiences to celebrate their love.
Why Iceland is Perfect for an Intimate Wedding or Elopement
Iceland makes for a perfect destination elopement location for many reasons. One reason is that it’s not actually too far away to travel to, depending on where you’re coming from of course. If you’re travelling from North America, it’s not as far as flying to the rest of Europe (only 5-6 hours by plane from Toronto, where I flew out of).
Iceland’s Dramatic Landscapes
Iceland’s landscape is so unique, it would make for an amazing adventure for any couple; whether you’re into hiking and more extreme activities, or just love to casually sightsee with your sweetie, there’s amazing sights no matter what level of adventure you’re into. The ring road takes you through the whole perimeter of the island, making touristy spots and more private ones easily accessible. You’ll see such a variety of landscapes, from dramatic mountains, glaciers, black sand beaches, and waterfalls galore. It’s truly a “choose your own adventure” kind of place. Nature-loving couples who are into moody atmosphere and changeable weather would particularly love Iceland!
Accomodation
Iceland offers some really unique and interesting accommodation options as well. In my travels, I saw many cute cabins and pods, as well as gorgeous looking hotels. Iceland is also well equipped for those interested in doing camping, which is definitely the most economical way to stay. There is no wild camping allowed in Iceland, however there are an abundance of campgrounds around the island which makes it an easy way to travel. I rented a camper van myself, and enjoyed the flexibility it gave me to travel at my own pace and not have to stick to a pre-planned itinerary. Plus, it definitely saved me some money by being both my rental vehicle and my accommodation!
Bucket List Wedding & Honeymoon Destination
One of the best parts of doing a destination wedding or adventure elopement is that you can turn your wedding day into the first day of your honeymoon! Imagine getting married in the dramatic landscapes of Iceland, then getting to tour around for a week or two on your honeymoon; sounds amazing to me!
Some of My Favourite Iceland Elopement Locations Along the South Coast
I only had a little time in Iceland to tour around on my own since I was there to attend a photographer’s retreat for a few days. Since the retreat was based in Selfoss, I decided to spend my time touring the South Coast, from Reykjavik to Vestrahorn. Here is a list of my top locations for your Iceland elopement inspiration.
Vik: Black Sand Beaches & Moody Coastal Landscapes
Black Sand Beaches
Reynisfjara Beach
This black sand beach is a must-see sight along the South Coast. It features rugged ocean scenes and towering basalt columns. Reynisfjara also features a cave known as Halsanefshellir; You used to be able to enter it during low tide but with the recent 2026 erosion of Reynisfjara, the cave has become unsafe to access, but this could change over time.
Although Reynisfjara is a beautiful site, it is also a dangerous one. There are waves here known as “sneaker waves”, which can come much further in along the beach than people expect, and can easily pull people back out to the ocean. Scary stuff, and not to be messed with. As much as I love the basalt columns, it’s a risky spot for the perfect photo. Further down the beach there are far less crowds, and it would make a suitable spot as a stop off point for some photos.
Víkurfjara Beach
If a black sand beach is high on your list of locations, Víkurfjara beach is also a beautiful beach and much safer. Accessed right in Vik, this beach gives dramatic cliff views and a cinematic feel. The wind and movement here is stunning for elopement photos. It also offers some gorgeous grassy areas as well, to add a little more variety to your photos and really take in the scale of the cliffs. A Perfect location for couples looking for something that feels emotional and wild while being easily accessible, Víkurfjara beach is definitely worth being part of your elopement day.
Vestrahorn: Dramatic Mountain Views for Adventurous Couples
Even though I was short on time, I decided that I couldn’t go to Iceland without seeing Vestrahorn. It was a little further out of the way than I had hoped, but in the end I couldn’t give it a miss. I didn’t get any sunset or sunrise photos unfortunately since it was quite cloudy, but I also loved the moodiness of the weather. I’m confident that photos here are stunning no matter the weather. This is a perfect spot for couples looking for a quiet, intimate elopement with dramatic mountain views and black sand beaches.
I thoroughly enjoyed my brief overnight stay there. The iconic mountain backdrop would make for such a stunning elopement location. The wet sand reflects the mountain in such a beautiful and dramatic way. Even though there were a few other people around when I visited (although far fewer people than many of the other places I had visited so far), it still felt very intimate and isolated. There are trails to explore, as well as a viking ship and village that were used in a movie set years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed walking along the sand and taking in the dramatic mountain views. I visited the mountains in the late evening, and then again the next morning before I left. I camped in the campground at Vestrahorn, which included free access to the road that leads to the mountain views and trails.
I also encountered some beautiful Iceland horses while I was in the Vestrahorn area. They were well worth the stop!
Selfoss & Iceland’s Waterfall Region
Get ready to see the waterfalls of my dreams. The photography retreat that I attended was based in Selfoss, due to its proximity to SO MANY amazing waterfalls. Selfoss has a softer, countryside feel for some quieter romantic moments; but, it’s a great area to use as a basecamp, since not only is it close to many waterfalls, it’s also near the Golden Circle and just over an hour’s drive from Reykjavik.
Skogafoss
Once of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, Skogafoss is not one to miss. I loved being able to step farther away from this waterfall to really take in the view, especially in the background of this couples’ photos. You can even walk up steps beside the waterfall, and get views from above, or keep hiking up to see even more views. This is a popular spot which does get busy with crowds, but there were very few people there when we went early in the morning.
Kvernufoss
Not too far east from Skogafoss you’ll find Kvernufoss, probably my favourite waterfall location for elopements. I’ve heard that it doesn’t seem to get as many visitors as Skogafoss, and there definitely weren’t an abundance of people there when I visited. It takes 15-20 minutes to reach the waterfall from the parking lot, along an easy and enjoyable path.
There were many lovely spots along the way to the waterfall to stop for photos. When I was there in May, it wasn’t overly green yet, but I imagine that the greens would be even more vibrant in summer.
Seljalandsfoss
I enjoyed several spots in this location visiting Seljalandsfoss waterfall. You get good bank for your parking bucks here, since there is actually more than one waterfall to visit. The grassy areas near the parking lot provided beautiful distant views of the waterfall in the background for some engagement photo’s. There is also a bridge closer to the waterfall that is very picturesque.
It was quite busy when we were here, but people were very respectful of us while we took photos. Visitors can actually access areas not only beside Seljalandsfoss but also behind it. This allowed us to get very close to the waterfall for some creative shots; just be prepared to get wet, as the spray from the waterfall is quite strong!
Walking beyond Seljalandsfoss, you’ll find an unassuming waterfall called Gljufrabui. Gljufrabui offers a quieter, more tucked-away experience as you have to walk through a rocky passage to get to it. Getting a bit wet to access it is totally worth it though. Since the light is coming from above, it offers such a dramatic look inside when you get up close to the waterfall. We ended this couples elopement day here since we knew they would get wet, and we all agreed it was totally worth it.
This spot is perfect for couple’s who are up for a little adventure and don’t mind getting a little wet and messy on their elopement day.
Honourable Mentions
These locations didn’t make the top of my list, but would make for great stops during an elopement day (just maybe not the focus or main location for your elopement).
Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
I really enjoyed this short hike to see this spectacular canyon. There are many wonderful landscape photo opportunities so it was definitely worth the stop. For elopements however, it doesn’t offer many private spots to get away from the crowds, since the path is cordoned off on either side. Outside of the bridge at the start of the path, the lookout points wouldn’t offer much privacy for reading vows or having photos taken. Perhaps in the early morning it could work, but I’d recommend this as more of a sightseeing stop then an elopement location.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
A popular tourist attraction for a reason, this glacier lagoon is definitely worth a stop on your trip. The glaciers are beautiful and quite the site to see. For some, this would make a great elopement location, so long as you don’t mind crowds. I did find a quieter area in the lagoon that was farther from tourists, so it could definitely work if you want it to. You can also take boat and kayak tours which could be a fun activity to include on your elopement day.
Dyrholaey Lighthouse
A charming lighthouse perched on the Dryholaey peninsula, this location offers panoramic views of black sand beaches, rock formations, and ocean views. I love it for the panoramic views it offers, however it was fairly busy even in May (which wouldn’t be considered busy season), so I wouldn’t recommend it as a location to actually have your vow ceremony. Makes for stunning photos though!
Svartifoss & Vatnajokull National Park
Svartifoss is located in the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park. From the visitors centre, it’s about a 1.5km hike uphill to reach Svartifoss. I really enjoyed this little hike, although it was a bit more of a challenging hike being uphill (still very doable for most people though). The whole National Park is an area I would have loved to spend more time in, but I’m really glad I got the chance to hike to this cool waterfall. The dark basalt columns makes it a really interesting location. Since there’s a hike to get to it, the crowds weren’t too bad while I was there, but there were definitely people around and not too many places to stand in the very rocky area.
The Abandoned DC Plane on Sólheimasandur
A very different location compared to the rest I’ve included, this one is definitely unique! Back in the 70’s, this US DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed on this black sand beach. Everyone survived, but the white plane wreckage contrasted in the barren landscape of this black sand beach makes for a very cool and surreal location. I enjoyed my visit there, especially riding on the bus from the parking lot that’s been outfitted for the sand. This could make for some very unique and cool elopement photos, if you’re in to this sort of thing!
What an Iceland Elopement Could Actually Feel and Look Like
If you’re feeling drawn to Iceland for your elopement, here’s what it could feel like. Slow mornings and long days driving through landscapes you never imagines existed. Stops at the most scenic rest areas that give you so many quiet moments together, just taking in your surroundings. Embracing the weather, and keeping cozy in cabins or campers. An elopement experience that feels more meaningful than a traditional timeline.
What an Iceland Elopement Could Look Like
Here’s an example of what an all-day elopement in Iceland could look like, with a focus on the waterfalls in the Selfoss area.
You get up early in your cozy cabin in the Selfoss area to get ready for your elopement day. You get ready in separate spaces, and do a first look outside in the expansive landscape. You then depart to Kuvernufoss where you’ll read your vows within the gorge, the stunning waterfall and green spaces as your backdrop. We’ll take our time her exploring the waterfall and taking it all in. After this, we’ll travel to Víkurfjara Beach to have a picnic lunch and pop some bubbly in the grassy area beside the cliffs. We’ll take some more photos on the striking black sand beach while you explore the area. You could even go for a private Icelandic horse riding tour while you’re here!
In the afternoon you’d have options; visit the Dyrholaey Lighthouse for panoramic views of the ocean, or the visit the Abandoned DC Plane on Sólheimasandur. Our waterfalls of the day would be to visit Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui. We’ll end here since you’ll get a bit wet stepping behind Seljalandsfoss and viewing the rocky interior of Gljufrabui. Dramatic photos inside Gljufrabui would be the most breathtaking way to end your sightseeing elopement adventure. After this, you’d drive back to your cozy cabin for a catered dinner celebrating you two and the adventure you’ve had and are about to embark on.

Best Time of Year for an Iceland Elopement
Spring
Springtime offers less crowds at popular spots and days that are getting longer and longer. The landscape is emerging with greens although it isn’t vibrant or in bloom fully yet, but is still stunning. Temperatures are warming, but layers are still needed.
Summer
Enjoy never-ending days with the midnight sun. All of iceland will be relatively accessible to you now that it’s summer. The landscapes are lush and green. The downside is that this is the busy tourist season, so popular spots will get busy.
Fall
The weather will feel moodier and the colours and look of the landscape are starting to change. The crowds will be less than the summer, and the temperature will be starting to drop.
Winter
Short days with little daylight allow for a high potential for seeing the northern lights. The weather conditions are harsher and snowy, with some areas of Iceland becoming inaccessible. This is the perfect time of year to go for couples who are hoping to see the Northern Lights.
Planning an Iceland Elopement from Canada
If you’re visiting Iceland from Canada (like me!), this section is for you!
Direct flights are offered from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax (some are seasonal). I flew from Ottawa and then direct from Toronto. I found my flights to be comfortable and enjoyed my travels with no issues.
If you’re looking to legally get married in Iceland there will be some planning and paperwork required on your part. The best thing to do is contact the embassy to get confirmation of what’s required, but is likely to include things like notarized copies of your passports/birth certificates, marriage search letter, etc. Something that many couples who marry abroad choose to do is to legally marry in their home country (ie. city hall) but do their vows and ceremony at their elopement. This way you don’t have to worry about everything being legal while you’re abroad.
A tip about the weather and what to pack: Although we’re used to the cold in Canada (and Iceland doesn’t actually get too cold compared to what many of us are used to), the wind can be intense. I travelled to Iceland in May, and was often wearing a long sleeve shirt and a sweater and/or rain jacket. I often had my cross country skiing pants over my leggings as well, to cut out some of the wind. The landscape is vast and barren, so be prepared for fast changing weather and high winds.
