Eloping in Canada: How to Plan a Scenic, Soulful Elopement Adventure

There’s something deeply romantic about eloping in Canada. Maybe it’s the stillness of a mountain lake at sunrise, the golden light in a field of wildflowers, or the feeling of standing at the edge of the world with the person you love most. Whether you picture yourselves hiking into the backcountry of Algonquin Park, saying vows beside the ocean, or embracing among the pines in Ontario cottage country—Canada offers an endless array of breathtaking, wildly beautiful places to elope.

As a Canadian elopement photographer with a love for exploring nature, I help couples plan meaningful, grounded, joy-filled elopements in some of the country’s most stunning landscapes. Having travelled from the cliffs of Newfoundland to the rainforests of Vancouver Island, I’ve seen firsthand just how magical and diverse the Canadian landscape is.

If you’re dreaming of eloping in Canada, here’s what to consider—and a few location ideas inspired by my own journeys.

Why Elope in Canada?

From coast to coast (to coast), Canada offers:

  • Diverse landscapes: mountains, oceans, forests, cliffs, waterfalls, tundra, prairies—you name it.
  • Four distinct seasons: snow-dusted winter elopements, wildflower-filled spring, golden autumns, and warm summer nights.
  • Adventure-ready locations: whether you want to hike, paddle, road trip, or just sit on a windswept beach with your person.
  • Elopement-friendly rules: Most provinces allow flexible outdoor ceremonies, and you can often get legally married with just two witnesses and a licensed officiant.

How to Plan an Elopement in Canada

If you’re eloping in Canada—whether you’re local or flying in from abroad—here are the key steps to build a day that feels adventurous, grounded, and you:

  1. Hire a photographer who knows the landscape
Your photographer can be your greatest planning ally—helping you discover hidden-gem locations, navigate permits, suggest timelines based on light, and craft a day that feels effortless and intimate. If you’re dreaming of a forest elopement, a coastal hike, or anything in between, I’ve got location ideas (and backup plans) ready to go.
  2. Choose your location
Think about the scenery that feels most like you two. Close your eyes and picture yourself eloping; what comes to your mind? Pay attention to your emotions and how you feel as you visualize it. Let this image guide you. Maybe you’re imagining a windswept coastline or a misty forest. Or a rocky mountaintop with scenic views. Your vision will shape where we go—and how we get there.
  3. Pick your season
Canada’s climate varies widely, so consider what kind of experience you want. Autumn brings golden colours, summer is lush and vibrant (but quite hot in many areas of the country), winter offers peaceful snowscapes (but very cold in some parts), and spring means waterfalls and wildflowers (and the return of mosquitos in many areas).
  4. Understand the legal requirements
Each province has its own process for obtaining a marriage license, but most allow you to legally marry with just two witnesses and a registered officiant. I can help guide you through the process depending on where you want to elope.

Eloping in Canada from Abroad

Canada is a popular elopement destination for couples from the U.S., U.K., Europe, and beyond—and for good reason. The landscapes are jaw-dropping, the people are kind, and the logistics are (relatively) simple.

Here’s what to keep in mind if you’re planning your Canadian elopement from outside the country:

  • Legal marriage vs. symbolic ceremony:
If you want to be legally married in Canada, you’ll need to follow the specific requirements for the province you choose. Most do not require residency, but you’ll need to apply for a marriage license and provide valid identification.
Some couples choose to legally marry at home, then hold a symbolic ceremony during their Canadian elopement—especially if they’re planning something more remote or adventurous.
  • Check visa requirements:
Visitors from many countries can travel to Canada visa-free or with an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization). You can check visa and entry requirements at Canada.ca.
  • Book vendors early:
Canada is a big country with some sparsely populated regions. If you’re dreaming of a secluded or remote location, book your photographer, officiant, and accommodations early—especially in peak travel months (June–September).
  • Make sure your vendors are legally allowed to work in Canada:
Hiring a Canadian-based photographer ensures they’re legally permitted to work, carry insurance, and understand the nuances of the location. As a Canadian elopement photographer, I’m licensed, insured, and deeply familiar with the geography, weather, and local guidelines that make your day smoother.

Elopement Locations in Canada (From Coast to Coast)

Here are a few favourite places I’ve explored that make for unforgettable elopements:

Ontario – Home Sweet (Wild) Home

As an Ontario-based photographer, I know the backroads, lakes, and forests like the back of my hand. Some favourites:

  • Algonquin Park: For canoe lovers, backcountry camping, or misty sunrise ceremonies.
  • Prince Edward County: Wineries, charming inns, and golden fields—perfect for a more laid-back countryside elopement.
  • Ottawa Valley & Lanark Highlands: Rolling farmland, forest trails, and intimate hideaways.

Montreal, Quebec – Urban Meets Romance

I spent years studying in Montreal, and I still think it’s one of the most romantic cities in Canada. For couples wanting a blend of European charm, food, and art, an intimate elopement here is rich in texture and atmosphere.

Vancouver Island, BC – Rainforest and Rugged Coastline

There’s a magic to Vancouver Island I can’t quite put into words. Picture:

  • Mossy trails through ancient trees
  • Clifftop views over the Pacific
  • Black sand beaches with dramatic skies

Tofino, Ucluelet, and even the ferry ride over from the mainland—it’s all part of the adventure.

Atlantic Canada – Windswept, Wholesome, and Wild

I’ve been lucky enough to explore the east coast more than once, and it always steals a piece of my heart.

  • PEI: Red sand beaches, quiet charm, and some of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen.
  • Nova Scotia: Halifax’s creative energy meets coastal cliffs, lighthouses, and cozy seaside towns.
  • Newfoundland: In 2018, I hiked the Long Range Traverse in Gros Morne National Park—jaw-dropping views, fjords, and raw, untamed beauty. If you’re an adventurous couple looking for something truly off the beaten path, this is it.
