What Even Is An Elopement?

You start the day getting ready with your closest people. You do a first look outside by the lake, where you've spent countless summer days together already. You have a heartfelt, intimate ceremony with your closest few family members and friends out on the deck, exchanging personal vows. After the ceremony, your guests do a champagne toast to you, while you have passed appetizers. You listen to some heartfelt speeches and take some family portraits before you step away for some time with just the two of you by the lake. You have your first dance as the sun sets over the water, listening to your favourite slow song. Perhaps you share a short canoe ride to your favourite spot on the lake, or walk with lanterns as blue hour sets in. You end the night celebrating with your loved ones, fireside at the cottage. Read about more elopement ideas for the Ottawa region here.

At your cute airbnb, you and your partner start the day with a shared favourite breakfast, before getting ready in separate rooms. You do your first look outside, before having a lovely little ceremony with just your witnesses present. You do a toast with some bubbly inside, before hopping into your hired car for a day of touring and sightseeing in The County. You have lunch at a brewery, visit a cidery and scenic spots along the lake, before having dinner at a beautiful vineyard. You end the day with the most stunning sunset you've ever seen at Outlet Beach in Sandbanks Provincial Park. Read more about this real elopement here

You and your partner get ready in the cozy nooks of your rented Irish cottage in the morning. You finish writing your vows, before doing a first look outdoors in a stunning valley. You travel to your first destination in Killarney National Park, where you take a short hike to a lookout point to share your personal vows. The windswept cliffs and ocean views bring even more emotion to this moment. After spending some time taking some stunning photos, you stop for lunch in a cozy little pub, and share a pint of stout (not Guinness on this side of the island :P) in an intimate little corner of the pub. You spend the afternoon travelling around the area to different spots to sightsee, ending with the stunning views in the Gap of Dunloe. You can see more Ireland elopement inspiration here

What even is an elopement?

People interpret "elopement" in different ways, but for me, it means a smaller, more intimate wedding that primarily focuses on the couple's experience, and not their guests. Here are some examples of what your elopement day could look like (click the arrow to see more).

Amanda checked every box for our photography needs. She photographed our intimate April wedding, surrounded only by immediate family in a cozy, romantic setting, and she immediately understood our vision. We wanted something a bit different from the typical “wedding” photos and were able to share inspiration and vibe ideas with her. She suggested splitting our shoot into two smaller sessions- one more traditional with family on the wedding day, and another the night before where we could have fun and capture candid, unique photos true to our style. It was the perfect recommendation.

Throughout the process, Amanda was kind, warm, and made us feel completely comfortable in front of the camera. She asked thoughtful questions to get a clear sense of our vision and offered helpful suggestions whenever we were unsure. When the gallery popped up in our email, we were so excited, and the photos exceeded our expectations! We loved the whole experience and would highly recommend Amanda to anyone. Thank you, Amanda!

I’ve been a lover of 35mm film since learning how to develop it in my high school’s darkroom (it was a closet). Film preserves emotion in a way that is difficult to replicate in digital format, that’s why I include it in my elopement packages. You’ll receive a mix of film and digital photos, which allows me to provide you with emotion-driven, nostalgic images that blend documentary and cinematic styles.

Common FAQs

Elopements today aren’t about running away in secret , they’re about creating a day that’s intentionally small, deeply meaningful, and true to you. Everyone will have a different definition, but I consider an elopement something that is typically more activity-based than a traditional wedding. It could involve travel to destination in Canada or abroad, hiking to a lookout point in Gatineau Park, or doing some other kind of activity that represents you as a couple. This activity doesn't need to be overly adventurous either, it could be as simple as eloping at your family cottage near Ottawa with just your best friends.  Elopements also typically only involve the couple, and maybe a few of their closest friends/family.

We don't want our day to feel like a photoshoot - is that possible?

Do you travel for elopements?

Can you help us find the perfect location?

Do you help with the planning?

How far in advance should we book?

Absolutely! I totally get it. You're eloping with intention, and don't want to feel like you need to smile for the camera all day. Lucky for you, that's not my style at all. I help craft elopements that leave lots of time to relax and breathe;  I specialize in documentary photography, which means capturing authentic moments. We'll stop at certain points in the day for taking some intentional portraits, but the majority of the day will be spent with your partner simply enjoying yourselves!

I sure do! My typical coverage area is in the Ottawa region of Ontario, but I'm an adventurer at heart. I've travelled pretty extensively in Europe, so have quite a bit of experience there (my husband is actually from Ireland and I used to live there!). I am always looking forward to my next adventure so would love to hear about what you have in mind.

Yes, I help a lot with the planning. One thing that is unique about elopements, is that I play a much larger role in helping craft your day. From locations, to timing, to selecting activities to do or places to go, I help with all of it. Plus, all of my elopement packages include an Elopement Guide customized just for you!

I always recommend selecting your photographer as far in advance of your elopement as possible, since they can provide so much help with planning. For weekend dates during peak wedding season (May-October), I recommend booking 6-12 months in advance if you can. Weekday elopements usually have more availability than weekends if you're planning something more last-minute. Fill out my contact form here to inquire about your date/general time of year that you have in mind.
