Golden hour—that dreamy time just before sunset, is always my favourite. The light is warm, soft, and nostalgic (especially if we’re shooting somewhere with tall grass or open skies). Each season brings with it beautiful opportunities for engagement photos, whether it be getting cozy in a cabin in Winter or frolicking at the beach in Summer.
Here are a few seasonal considerations if you’re local to Ottawa or the Valley:
- Late spring: Perfect for wildflowers, soft greens, and long daylight
- Early fall: Crisp air and fiery leaves
- Winter: Cozy vibes in the snow (especially if you’re into layers and snuggling)
Weekdays tend to be quieter in more popular locations, which means fewer crowds and more intimacy for your photos.
What to Wear for Engagement Photos
No need to dress all matchy -matchy, you just want to complement each other. Soft neutrals, earth tones, and layered textures tend to photograph beautifully outdoors.
Here are some tips:
- Choose movement-friendly clothes (flowy dresses, unstructured shirts, linen, denim)
- Bring layers—cozy sweaters, jackets, or hats which can add variety to your photos
- Avoid bold logos or neon colours that distract the viewers eye from you
Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel good. Comfort and confidence always shine through in photos.

A flower-filled farm that’s dreamy at golden hour—ideal for laid-back, nature-loving couples.
🏞 Trails & Conservation Areas
From winding riverside paths to quiet wooded trails, the Ottawa Valley is full of hidden gems for outdoorsy engagement sessions. Somewhere like Gatineau Park would also be well-suited to more adventure-loving couples.
🏡 Merrickville
Charming stone buildings, ivy-covered alleys, and a quiet riverwalk make this heritage town a beautiful and unique backdrop.
🌅 Open Fields & Country Roads
Sometimes the best spots are the simplest—wide open skies, a dirt road, and the two of you just being yourselves.
