Moody Gros Morne Elopement at Sunset

A Wild, Windy, and Beautiful Adventure Elopement in Gros Morne National Park
When you think of an adventure elopement in Canada, it’s hard to imagine a more awe-inspiring setting than Gros Morne National Park. Towering fjords, sweeping coastal views, and endless wilderness—it’s the kind of place where love stories feel as big as the landscape. And that’s exactly what made this Gros Morne elopement on the Lookout trail so unforgettable.
I had the amazing opportunity to attend a photography retreat on the West coast of Newfoundland at the end of July, and this is one of the beautiful shoots I had the chance to be a part of.
A Trail Worth the Climb: Lookout Hills trail, Woody Point
Tucked just outside the charming town of Woody Point, the Lookout Hills trail offers one of the most breathtaking views in all of Newfoundland. It’s a steady climb, with switchbacks that wind through the forest and open up to expansive lookouts over Bonne Bay and the Tablelands. And at the top? Wind-whipped peaks and the kind of panoramic view that makes your heart race.
That’s where these two said their vows—just the two of them and their closest friends as witnesses, surrounded by mountains, mist, and the kind of silence that only nature can offer.

Why Choose an Adventure Elopement in Gros Morne?
For couples who crave something adventurous, rooted in nature, and totally unique, a Gros Morne elopement is the perfect match. Whether you’re hiking into the hills, exchanging vows by a waterfall, or catching the golden hour light at one of the many beautiful beaches, the park offers endless opportunities to craft a day that truly reflects your love.
Adventure elopements aren’t just about the destination—they’re about choosing experience over expectation. It’s about lacing up your boots, embracing the wild weather, and trusting that the imperfect moments will be the most meaningful ones.
The Gros Morne Elopement
We started the evening hike at the trailhead by the Discovery Centre, where the fog was just beginning to lift off the water. With backpacks packed and boots on, we set out up the trail—laughing, pausing for lots of water breaks, and soaking in the stillness and beautiful views along the climb. As we got closer to the summit, a meadowy plateau emerged with a breathtaking view of Bonne Bay; this is the spot we chose to have the ceremony. The wind picked up and the sky was a moody mix of clouds and light.
The ceremony was simple and perfect. Just vows, tears and laugher, wind, and wild landscape. The fog rolled in as we began; we lost the view, but the fog added it’s own beautiful, moody look to the setting. Afterwards, we wandered along the trail and meadow for portraits—hair tangled, cheeks pink, and hearts full. There was no rush, just presence.

Planning Your Own Gros Morne Elopement
If you’re dreaming of a Newfoundland adventure elopement, Gros Morne is one of the most magical places you could choose. Whether you’re hiking into the hills or exchanging vows on a tucked away beach you hiked to, the park offers endless opportunities to create an experience uniquely yours.
Here are a few planning tips:
- Go prepared: For sunset elopements, remember that you might be hiking down in the dark (in the woods, it will get darker faster)—bring headlamps, warm layers, and proper footwear. The trails can be slick and steep. Even in the middle of summer, the temperatures can be quite cool, especially in the mountains.
- Embrace the weather: Fog, wind, rain, and changing light are all part of the magic here. Some of the most emotional photos come from the unexpected. Make sure you bring a rain jacket, and maybe even an extra pair of socks!
- Know your trail: The Lookout trail is a rated a moderately challenging hike, but we all agreed it wasn’t for beginners. Give yourself time to rest, soak it in, and be present.
- Hire experienced support: A photographer familiar with the terrain (hi, that’s me!) can help you stay safe, relaxed, and fully in the moment.
